The Marangu route (also known as the "Coca-Cola" route) is one of the most popular routes up Kilimanjaro. Its well-developed paths and gentle ascent (with the exception of the summit day itself) make this route popular with less experienced mountain hikers.

Tour Itinerary

Day 0:Arrival Day

 When your flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Rauforest Adventure will be waiting to transport you to Moshi. The city boasts one of the best views in the world, with front-row seats to Mount Kilimanjaro. Moshi is also home to pleasant tree-lined streets, bustling marketplaces, and your own first-rate accommodations for tonight: the Rauforest Villa. After getting checked in, you can spend the rest of the day exploring the lovely grounds,  dining at the hotel restaurant, or even exploring the city. Tomorrow we’ll begin our ascent of Kilimanjaro in earnest, so make sure to get plenty of sleep.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) → Mandara Hut (2,720m)

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

  • Distance: 8km

  • Habitat: Rainforest

  • Start at Marangu Gate, register, and begin trekking through lush rainforest.

  • Reach Mandara Hut for overnight stay.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,720m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

    • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

    • Distance: 12km

    • Habitat: Moorland

    • Trek through open moorland with views of Mawenzi Peak.

    • Arrive at Horombo Hut for rest and acclimatization.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

      • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

      • Distance: 10km

      • Habitat: Alpine Desert

      • Ascend through the barren alpine desert towards Kibo Hut.

      • Rest early in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

        • Summit Time: 6-8 hours (midnight start)

        • Descent Time: 4-6 hours

        • Distance: 22km (round trip)

        • Begin the steep climb to Gilman’s Point (5,681m), then proceed to Uhuru Peak.

        • Descend back to Horombo Hut for rest.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,860m)

          • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

          • Distance: 20km

          • Final descent through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate.

          • Receive your summit certificate (if successful).
